Today is Visiting Day!! I’m so excited to see my oldest and hear all about camp. We’ve been so fortunate with the weather this week, so I went to the market and bought a ton of stuff for content day on Thursday. Now’s the time to get as many tomatoes as you can eat.
Today I’m sharing the top veggies to get when you go to the market, how to pick the best ones, and what to make with them when you get home. Don’t forget to add a few bundles of herbs to your basket, too!
New to market shopping? Here’s my deep dive:
Just got a weighted vest to make my morning walks more impactful. I also have the Bala bangles.
I’ve been thinking about getting a wagon to go to the market with and finally made the plunge. I landed on this wagon; it’ll get a lot of use between Visiting Day and the beach.
I got this necklace for my oldest and this one for my youngest—so cute for summer.
On my oldest’s list of things to bring her were a pickleball set and taba squishies.
This is the only toothpaste my little one likes so I stocked up.
Buy this: Corn
We spotted bi-color and sweet white corn the other day; get whatever looks best. Some stands don’t want you to shuck the corn there (unlike at the grocery store), so feel the cob a little and make sure to grab the ones without soft spots.
Make this: Watermelon & Corn Salad
This is one of my favorite summer recipes—it’s sweet and salty and uses the best summer ingredients. So refreshing!
Buy this: Tomatoes
My favorite thing to buy at the market. I never liked tomatoes growing up, but I think that’s because I wasn’t eating good ones. (IYKYK.) I always look for ones that are red and hard. I love the little ones to eat on toast and the bigger ones to pile onto a sandwich.
Make this: Simple Tomato Salad
When you have ingredients this good, you don’t need to add a ton of stuff. This is my favorite salad, in a bowl or a pita. YUM.
Buy this: Zucchini
With zucchini, bigger isn’t always better. Choose one that’s a nice shade of green—not too light—and without nicks. I try to get small/medium-sized zukes. This time of year, there are endless rows of squash in all colors, so get whatever looks great to you.
Make this: Grilled Zucchini & Kale Pesto
I love this zucchini recipe because it’s simple—perfect for letting peak season produce shine.
Buy this: Eggplant
Pick up the eggplants and choose the one that feels lightest. Avoid those with bruises or obvious soft spots.
Make this: Roasted Eggplant & Pepper Dip
A smooth, creamy dip perfect for a backyard summer hang.
